The Ancient Greeks beheld Demeter as the goddess of the harvest and the seasons, and thus also the all-important goddess of the sacred cycle of life-death-rebirth.  In modern times, we are oft removed and dissociated from the natural world, facilitating a disregard for Demeter's admonition to remember and respect the cyclical nature of all things.  

Roses are a quintessential example of the life-death-rebirth cycle that dominates nature and our lives. Rose bushes need to be cut back quite severely in the fall to have healthy growth and bloom again in the spring.
